What is an "RET"?

July 3, 2010

In early Spring, I thought that this time of the year I woulod be lounging around and taking it easy- possibly working on a tan-- that didn't happen.....

This blog is to help explain why I decided to work this summer instead of taking the summer off .....

I received notice of a 6 week course this summer for Research Experience for Teachers.(RET) With this experience, we are put into teams to do research on a particular subject -- this happened to be on Biophotonics ( Bio-what...?!) -- essentially using basic science, engineering systems and biology in the research of things such as skin cancer with lasers, identifying diseases with light and designing portable devices for medical teams.

We were put into pairs --and then assigned a lab. The person that I was paired with is a pretty cool guy, Mr. P, who teaches Physics and Astronomy in Weymouth. We are in the lab where the project is , and I quote, "Scintillation measurements for high resolution X-Ray project lab"-- Essentially, this lab is working with fiber optics that have scintillators embedded in them so that the X-Rays are of a higher quality-- can read and detect things better without invasive surgery.

Photos will follow as I took alot this week and I will explain the processes.

My homework was to find out as much as I could about 1.) Fiber Optics and 2.) Total Internal Reflection (or TIR) so that I can be more helpful in the lab.

More to come.....
